A few months ago, we ran a quick usability survey for a client to test whether folks thought icons would be helpful.
The results were interesting: An overwhelming majority wanted icons and an overwhelming majority also said we needed to change ours to make them more useful. Sometimes, you get what you ask for. My favorite feedback was the person who said, "I didn't recongnize anything except the cake!" [It was supposed to be cheese.]
